Fallout from the update to DNN 5.1.2 – Newsletter failure

Well I thought it had all gone smoothly, then I tried to send an email out to the club. Oops, the module we use based on some code I acquired from DNN.com.au decided to fall over. Essentially it was using an out of date method for doing the SQL calls.

So I thought now is the time to upgrade from Visual Studio 2003 to 2008, from .Net 1 to 3.5, and DNN 4 to 5. What a major upheaval. I’ve now re-worked the module substantially, since many other bits and pieces were outmoded. I’ve broken out the dataprovider into a separate project, added in the auto generated designer files, so I don’t have to go declaring everything on my forms, upgraded how it sends email, and much more.

I also took the opportunity to give it a face lift, since it used to look a but humdrum. And I’ve added some extra functionality since I was giving it such a major overhaul.

For those who never came across the module, it is a newsletter emailer. The thing I like about it is that it is simple, it sends emails to a security role. And it keeps a record of what it sent, so people can view them online in case they got eaten by the spam traps. You can also save templates and unsent newsletters for later mailing.

If you are interested in it, send me an email – webmaster at this site. It isn’t fully localisable for multi-languages, but that is an easy change if needed, and I may even do it in the next few days.
