The Diving Club Update and Try-Dive offer The Diving Club Update and Try-Dive offer

Just a quick update following last night’s very successful club night...

Around 30 members enjoyed a BBQ at the Maiden Over and a very pleasant evening before going inside for an equally rewarding talk by David Jones about the side mount system for carrying cylinders. Much of the emphasis was based on the comfort and sheer ease of use of the system in a practical sense: Kitting up on boats, travel diving, trim and buoyancy etc AND the fact that this is a system you can move on to directly from your Open Water training.

The club has arrange an opportunity for members to have a try-dive using this system for a minimal charge to cover basic costs or pool hire and travel. If you are interested please contact Andrew Askwith.

Dave also spent some time talking about Plastic Oceans – a charity he supports that is tackling the issue of plastics polluting our oceans and damaging the marine ecosystem.

 Did you know:

  • In 2010, 300 million tonnes of plastic will be made – about half of this will be used just once then thrown away.
  • Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute.
  • Plastic particles in the oceans attract toxins. These enter the food chain; we are at the top of that food chain.

And this is not just a problem in far flung places, Dave showed some pictures taken of the Dorset coastline that highlighted this problem exists very close to home. Visit the Plastic Oceans website for more information.

We still have places on upcoming dives – please check out the dive calendar and book up. Empty places cost the club money and ultimately impact member value and the number of charters we can commit to over the year.

  • THIS WEEKEND – Portland Open Water with Fathom and Blues.

  • June 25/26th Eastbourne AOW+, 4 wreck in 2 days ranging from 25m – 38m.

Don’t forget that Nigel Wade will be discussing underwater photography at the July club night – bring you own photo’s if you want him to critique them for you. More information on the social calendar.
